What is musculoskeletal pain?

Musculoskeletal pain can be categorized into two main types: acute and chronic. These terms describe the duration and persistence of the pain.

Acute Musculoskeletal Pain:
Acute pain is typically of sudden onset and short duration. It is often caused by a specific injury or trauma to the musculoskeletal system, such as a sprain, strain, fracture, or muscle tear. Acute pain is usually temporary and serves as a warning signal to the body that something is wrong. It often resolves as the underlying injury or condition heals. Treatment for acute musculoskeletal pain may involve rest, ice, compression, elevation (RICE), pain medications, and physical therapy to promote healing and alleviate symptoms.

Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain:
Chronic pain, on the other hand, is characterized by persistent or recurrent pain lasting for more than three to six months, even after the initial injury or condition has healed. Chronic musculoskeletal pain can result from various causes, such as underlying medical conditions (e.g., arthritis, fibromyalgia), degenerative changes (e.g., osteoarthritis), nerve damage (e.g., neuropathy), or it may be idiopathic (without a clear underlying cause). Unlike acute pain, chronic pain often has a significant impact on a person’s daily life and functioning, including their physical, emotional, and social well-being.

FAQ

Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Technology (EPAT), sometimes referred to as ESWT or shock wave therapy, is the most advanced and highly effective non-invasive treatment method cleared by the FDA. This proprietary technology is based on a unique set of pressure waves that stimulate the metabolism, enhance blood circulation and accelerate the healing process.

Yes. This FDA cleared technology was developed in Europe and is currently used around the globe. A wealth of medical experience, state-of-the-art engineering, and optimal quality have been built into each EPAT® device; and extensive clinical studies and tests have confirmed its safety and efficacy. If performed by a qualified caregiver, Extracorporeal Pulse Activation Technology (EPAT®) has virtually no risks or side effects.

Generally, acute or chronic musculoskeletal pain and/or pain that significantly impairs mobility or quality of life including:

  • Achilles pain
  • Back and chest
  • Foot and ankle pain
  • Lower extremity pain
  • Neck pain
  • Neuromas
  • Shoulder pain
  • Tendon and/or tendon insertion pain
  • Trigger points
  • Upper extremity pain

The beneficial effects of EPAT® are often experienced with a protocol of 5-6 weekly treatments. Some patients report immediate pain relief after the treatment, although it can take up to four weeks for pain relief to begin. The procedure eliminates pain and restores full mobility, thus improving the patient’s quality of life. Over 80% of patients treated report to be pain free and/or have significant pain reduction.

Treatment sessions take approximately 5-20 minutes depending on the disorder to be treated. Generally, 3-5 treatment sessions are necessary at weekly intervals. More chronic conditions may require more sessions.

You will receive post-treatment instructions from your physician to follow during your recovery.

EPAT has a proven success rate that is equal to or greater than that of traditional treatment methods (including surgery) and without the risks, complications, and lengthy recovery time.

Coupling gel is applied to the treatment area of interest to enhance effectiveness. After these preparations, EPAT pressure waves are released via the applicator moved over the area of interest in a circular motion.

EPAT is:

  • Performed in your physician’s office/ clinic
  • Does not require anesthesia
  • Requires a minimal amount of time

Patients can:

  • Bear weight (i.e. walk) immediately,
  • Return to work/normal activities within 24-48 hours
  • Resume strenuous activities after 4 weeks.
The non-invasive EPAT® treatment has virtually no risks or side effects. In some cases, patients may experience some minor discomfort which may continue for a few days. It is normal to have some residual pain after intense exercise or a full day of work.

The safety and effectiveness of the EPAT procedure has not been determined on people with the following health conditions. Your doctor will provide you with information about how these and other conditions might affect the determination to perform the EPAT procedures.

  • Malignancies
  • DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis)
  • Pregnancy
