Painful diabetic neuropathy (PDN) occurs when long-term high blood sugar damages the nerves, most commonly in the feet and lower legs. Patients often describe burning, tingling, electric shocks, pins and needles, or painful numbness that can make standing, walking, or sleeping difficult.
